Two-stroke engine rebuilding
Two-stroke engine rebuild labor price: $300. This includes replacing all
bearings, bushings, and seals, installation of new piston, pin, bearing
& rings, lapping head if necessary, and replacing any transmission
components or other engine components that are worn or broken..
The basic techniques in engine rebuilding are nearly universally
applicable. However, most engines were designed with unique engineering
twists here and there. To guarantee perfection, it's best to work under
the guidance of a shop manual or Haynes or Clymer's manual that gives
details of unique requirements. If you can't supply me with your own copy
of such documentation, I would strongly recommend that you add the modest
cost of buying shop documentation (or finding it online for me) to the
job. It's an inexpensive investment that will ensure good results.
Points & condenser change, setting timing, stator
rewiring & other electrical work
Changing points and condenser price: $20. Stator rewiring $35. Includes cleaning stator plate (solvent or bead
blasting depending on circumstances). Changing
points requires re-timing the ignition. For engines with timing match-marks
there is no charge for re-setting timing. For engines without match marks for
top dead center and ignition firing, $20.
Port matching, port timing
modifications & port polishing
Porting & polishing work is negotiable depending on type of
engine & customer's instructions. We won't take directions to
arbitrarily just open up ports. Many two-stroke owners think making ports bigger
or increasing intake duration will automatically enhance performance. But
two-stroke timing is very complicated, and any change to port size or timing
will improve performance in one particular range and make it worse in others,
and can create a very narrow, unusable power band. If you want changes to port
timing, you are responsible for researching and providing information based on
either computer analysis of the optimal porting for your riding requirements, or
a formula that's already been proven by other riders that will work for you.
Who orders parts? You or Moto
Rapido?
Moto Rapido doesn't add a markup to parts required for rebuild work. You
can buy the parts and deliver them along with the engine or bike for
service, or Moto Rapido will order the parts from your favorite supplier
with no markup. Our preference on bearings & seals is to use SKF brand
or equivalent, and Chicago Rawhide seals or equivalent quality. Skimping
on bearings and seals is false economy. Save $5 by buying an inexpensive,
lower quality bearing, and regret it later when you have to pay somebody
to tear the whole engine apart to replace it when it goes bad.
Carb rebuilding
Carb rebuild labor is $25. Carb rebuild generally consists of removing
jets and soaking in carb cleaner, cleaning scale, gum and varnish from carb
bowl, replacing carb gaskets and float and needle (if necessary), and setting
float height if necessary.
