Two-stroke engine rebuilding
Two-stroke engine rebuild labor price: $300. This includes replacing all
bearings, bushings, and seals, installation of new piston, pin, bearing
& rings, lapping head if necessary, replacing any transmission
components or other engine components that are worn or broken, and
installing new points & condenser.
The basic techniques in engine rebuilding are nearly universally
applicable. However, most engines were designed with unique engineering
twists here and there. To guarantee perfection, it's best to work under
the guidance of a shop manual or Haynes or Clymers manual that gives
details of unique requirements. If you can't supply my with your own copy
of such documentation, I would strongly recommend that you add the modest
cost of buying shop documentation (or finding it online for me) to the
job. It's an inexpensive investment that will ensure good results.
Port matching, port timing
modifications & port polishing
Porting & polishing work is negotiable depending on type of
engine & customer's instructions.
Carb rebuilding
Carb rebuild is $25.

Stator rewiring
Stator rewiring is $25. Includes cleaning stator plate (solvent or bead
blasting depending on circumstances).

- Who orders parts? You or Moto
Rapido?
Moto Rapido doesn't add a markup to parts required for rebuild work. You
can buy the parts and deliver them along with the engine or bike for
service, or Moto Rapido will order the parts from your favorite supplier
with no markup. Our preference on bearings & seals is to use SKF brand
or equivalent, and Chicago Rawhide seals or equivalent quality. Skimping
on bearings and seals is false economy. Save $5 by buying an inexpensive,
lower quality bearing, and regret it later when you have to pay somebody
to tear the whole engine apart to replace it when it goes bad.

- Crank rebuilding and truing
-
Crank rebuilding
Crank rebuilding is generally $50. This includes pressing apart the crank,
installing new pin, bearing and con rod, and truing to within 0.0005"
Truing work done between precision centers, using precision dial test
indicators for accuracy. $25 extra charge if crank is rusted & needs
bead blasting. Note: while the lobes can be ugly, the stubs must be clean
and undamaged at seal-mating surfaces and bearing-mating surfaces. Tapers
must be clean, and keyways sound. Threads should be good. Center holes on
crank stub ends must be perfect. If somebody used a hammer on the crank
stubs and distorted the ends, it's nearly impossible to true the crank.
I'll polish cranks with damaged center holes and you can use them for a
paper weight.

metal finishing & plating

Lathe & milling machine work
Custom quotes, vary with job complexity.
Zinc plating & black oxide finishing
Plating & finishing varies by part complexity & quantity. Bargain
rates for one or two pieces (most shops charge at least $50 minimum).
Coffee can of fasteners approximately $50. Important: parts must arrive
ultra clean for plating. Must be solvent cleaned, de-rusted, bead blasted
and possibly polished for achieve quality finish. Preparation work for
plating is tedious, and I'd rather not do it. If I have to, it will cost
$50/hour. Save yourself the money and do the preparation yourself.
Metal polishing
Engine case polishing is $50
Other polishing jobs vary greatly by complexity of parts. E-mail for
quote.
